The University of Botswana (UB) has acknowledged the ongoing police investigation into an alleged rape case involving a senior lecturer and an 18-year-old female student. An online local press reported the arrest of the senior lecturer on suspicion of raping a student within the UB premises. While confirming the incident through an official statement, the university has not disclosed whether the lecturer will face suspension.

In their statement, the UB verified that they had received a report of an alleged rape involving one of their staff members and a university student. The case has been reported to the Botswana Police Services (BPS), currently investigating. The university asserts its full cooperation with the police to ensure a thorough and impartial handling of the matter.

The UB emphasized its commitment to taking the allegations seriously, treating the issue with the sensitivity and urgency it deserves. The statement assured the public of the university’s zero-tolerance stance toward any form of sexual misconduct. This commitment is highlighted by the recent launch of the revised UB Sexual Harassment Policy, demonstrating the institution’s dedication to fostering an environment of integrity and a safe space for all.

Addressing the broader concern of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in the country, UB expressed its unease with the increasing number of cases and pledged support for the Government of Botswana’s efforts to tackle this social problem. The university revealed its ongoing efforts by stating, “To that effect, the University is also conducting a study to contribute to the development of appropriate intervention measures that would assist in the formulation of policies and/or laws against GBV.” Regarding the specific case under investigation, UB mentioned, “The University will keep members of the public informed about any new developments related to this matter.”
